Mornington mum conquers Everest in extraordinary triumph over MS
For most people, a diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis would be life-changing.
For Mornington Peninsula mother Jen Willis, it became the catalyst for one of the world's greatest adventures.
Speaking with Brendon Telfer on Peninsula Talks, Jen revealed how years of unexplained fatigue, dizziness and numbness finally ended with an MS diagnosis that, surprisingly, brought relief.
"It puts the power back into your court about how you're going to deal with the condition," she said.
Rather than allowing the disease to define her future, Jen made herself a promise.
"If I ever get diagnosed, I'm going to climb mountains."
It was a promise born decades earlier after her grandfather introduced her to the world of mountaineering through books and stories that ignited a lifelong fascination with the world's highest peaks.
That dream ultimately led to Mount Everest.
Her first summit attempt in 2023 ended in heartbreak after logistical failures forced her to turn back at 8,000 metres — deep inside Everest's infamous "death zone". Alone in a tent on the South Col, just 848 metres below the summit, she described feeling emotionally empty after months of preparation.
Many would have walked away.
Jen did the opposite.
She returned to Nepal, supported other climbers, refined her preparation and vowed she would be back.
On 18 May 2025, everything finally came together.
After an exhausting 26-hour push from Camp Four to the summit and back to Camp Two, Jen stood on the highest point on Earth as the sun rose across the Himalayas.
Even then Everest demanded one final test.
"I'd frozen my corneas," she recalled. "It was like looking through frosted glass."
Today Jen says the mountain has completed its work.
Her focus has shifted to raising awareness of Multiple Sclerosis, encouraging others facing illness or adversity to keep chasing ambitious goals, and reminding people that resilience is often built one determined step at a time.
As she told Peninsula Talks, "When I want to do something, I have a lot of determination and mental strength."
For Mornington mum Jen Willis, that determination carried her all the way to the roof of the world.
